ROME – The centre-right beats the centre-left 1 – 4. And it is not a mistake. An increasingly divided majority, crossed by strong tensions especially on the war, presents itself in the Senate with a single resolution on the communications of the premier, only to then give them a thrashing in the Chamber. See the accusation of the Northern League member Massimiliano Romeo, at times even mocking, towards Giorgia Meloni and her hyper-Atlantist line.

Instead the four opposition parties, in spite of the professions of unity that always apply for the next day, not only move in random order, each waving its own resolution, but during the debate they peck at each other as if the opponent were the neighbor on the bench and not the one sitting between the benches of the government. Which on two far from secondary issues – the conflict in Ukraine and the ecological transition – also receives the vote in favor of the Third Pole, which had asked to separate the pro-Meloni text in order to be able to approve the most welcome parts together with the majority .

A choice that ends up making the irreducible distance of the Calenda-Renzi duo from the rest of the progressive front even more evident. Bearer of a clear message for the Prime Minister: if FI were to collapse or the League throws a tantrum, there are those who are ready to come to the rescue. In the center yes, but tending to the right.

Although the documents of Pd, M5S and Verdi-SI are almost superimposable – although the last two are declaredly against new military supplies, never even mentioned by the Dems – in the Assembly the minorities play at separating themselves from each other. Especially the grillini. I decided to wave the flag of pacifism to embarrass Elly Schlein’s party.

“We have been experiencing a terrible conflict for 13 months which has assumed abnormal dimensions and a nuclear catastrophe is on the horizon”, begins the starry Alessandra Maiorino in an apocalyptic tone. “President, don’t you think the time has come to stop? One thing is clear outside the Palace, but not to you: the strategy of continuous arms shipments to Ukraine is failing”, she hoarsely said. “We started with minimal devices, now Zelensky wants fighter-bombers. Is Italy actively entering the war? Say it clearly.”

An attack that speaks to the premier so that the former allies, immediately called into question, understand: “Intellectual honesty is needed and I also say it to the Democratic Party”, concludes the grillina: “Whoever is for escalation cannot also be for diplomacy. You burned this road with belligerent fury”. Exactly the same words – warlike fury – vomited for months by Conte on Letta.

A provocation not to be accepted, for the dem senators. And in fact “our position is clear”, claims the deputy group leader Alessandro Alfieri: “Never equidistance, always on the side of liberal democracies, on the side of the Ukrainian people and their legitimate right to defend themselves”. With weapons, of course. Though it’s best not to let anyone know about it.
