Arezzo, M5s city councilor against the Ukrainian flag: “Away from the Municipality” – Corriere.it

The announcement came via social media. “The Ukrainian flag was removed from the facade of the Town Hall. It took the intervention of the prefect but in the end we restored regularity and decorum. Palazzo Comunale is not a private residence where you can do what you want”. This was written by the Five Star councilor (minority) in Arezzo Michele Menchetti. Menchetti, starred in the past who ended up at the center of some controversy for his no green pass position, to win his battle against the display of the Ukrainian flag (which has been flying since the beginning of the conflict with Russia) turned first to the mayor and then to the prefect.

The starred first asked a question to the center-right mayor Alessandro Ghinelli to ask to remove the banner from the town hall building (“You have been placed there for a year”). Ghinelli replied by saying that in he he would have spoken to the prefect and would later have given a written response to the m5S councilor. Not having received an answer, Menchetti addressed the prefect directly via certified email: “The only flags that can be displayed are those of the Italian Republic and the European Union”, claims the M5S exponent. And he continues: “I’m certainly not saying it, but a national law”. The prefect intervenes and the banner is removed. “I want to thank the prefect for having the decoration restored,” says Menchetti.
