Group leader in the Chamber in 2014

In July 2014 he was elected party leader for the first time in the Chamber of Deputies, succeeding Giancarlo Giorgetti. Loyal to Salvini, since September 2014 he has been regional secretary of the League in Friuli Venezia Giulia, a position he holds until 2019. While in 2018 he was re-elected deputy for the third time. According to the productivity rankings, the Openpolis scales, for years he was the second most productive deputy in the Chamber, behind Donatella Ferranti of the Democratic Party.

The first election as governor of FVG

Although the centre-right coalition had initially indicated former president Renzo Tondo as a candidate for the presidency of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, on 21 March 2018 the centre-right candidacy of Fedriga was made official at Palazzo del Lloyd Triestino , a candidacy on which the federal secretary of the League Matteo Salvini has bet very strongly. He was elected President of the Region on April 29 with 57% of the votes against 26.9% of Sergio Bolzonello (supported by the centre-left coalition)

Intransigent on the immigration front

From the first days after taking office, he sided against the widespread acceptance of refugees, arguing that the voluntary repatriation of non-EU citizens should be encouraged. By signing, as a first measure, a resolution that cuts spending on the reception front by over one million euros, he allocates a sum of 50,000 euros for assisted return to his homeland. Greater garrison of the forces of order, controlled immigration, strategic pact with companies to encourage employment, an efficient health system. These are his watchwords.

Pro vax during the epidemic period

He declared himself in favor of vaccinations but against vaccination obligations, stating: “I am in favor of vaccines and an alliance with families is necessary to achieve the result, not imposition”. But with respect to the doubts about home vaccines in Northern League circles, he also declared: «I only know one form of precaution against Covid. Get vaccinated. I did it when my turn came.” He also ended up under threat from the no vax who called him “criminal”, “impostor”, for the phrase “I’m tired of nonsense. The Covid vaccine is there and it works. And I say it clearly. It’s not experimental.”
