The global logistics and transport giant Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) opens the air division for the transport of goods waiting to understand what will happen to the Ita Airways dossier. It will be called MSC Air Cargo and its take-off is expected in early 2023 when the first four Boeing 777-200Fs will arrive, which will have the livery of the new airline and will be operated by Atlas Air, a company that already operates in the air freight sector.

The novelty

The introduction of the cargo division will add to container freight transport. In parallel, MSC announces the appointment of Jannie Davel (with positions in Delta Cargo, Emirates SkyCargo and Dhl) with the aim of developing the air cargo business and building the team that will take care of it. We are pleased to announce the development of MSC Air Cargo and to welcome Davel to lead this exciting new reality which will be available to all MSC customers, confirms Soren Toft, CEO of MSC. This is our debut in this market – he continues – and we intend to continue to explore all possible ways to develop the air cargo sector and thus integrate our core business of containerized freight transport.

The sale of Ita

MSC tried together with Lufthansa to buy 80% of Ita Airways, the Italian company that took off in place of Alitalia on October 15th. But on 31 August the Treasury – Ita’s sole shareholder – preferred the offer of Certares (with the commercial partnership of Delta Air Lines and Air France-KLM). The exclusive negotiation should expire on 30 September, but an extension to understand whether the Mef will be able to find an agreement with Certares for the sale of 50% plus an Ita share is not excluded. On the Ita dossier for MSC and Lufthansa he does not give up and continue to follow with interest what will happen, ready to take over.

The competition

But MSC’s need to start an air division for freight transport as soon as possible also arises from market conditions: the main rivals of the giant led by the Aponte family have already started their own cargo airlines. Cma Cgm, for example, in addition to becoming a shareholder of Air France-KLM (with 9%), also launched Cma Cgm Air Cargo in 2021 with a fleet of 6 aircraft and ordered 7 more. MSC’s rival, Maersk, started Maersk Air Cargo with the initial goal of employing 8 aircraft.
