At least 200 flights will be canceled in Italy on May 19 due to the proclamation of various strikes – in some cases lasting twenty-four hours – by workers in the aviation, airport and related industries. As summarized by the National Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC), workers from handling companies (from 00:01 to 23:59), Air Dolomiti flight personnel (24 hours), the staff of the low cost Volotea (from 1 to 5 pm), the ground staff of American Airlines (from 12 to 4 pm) and Emirates (again from 12 to 4 pm).

The communications

As almost always happens with strikes in Italy, not all airlines publish the list of canceled flights on their websites, while others shift the connection times to minimize the impact. While Ita Airways publishes on its web page all 111 flights canceled due to strikes, 109 of which on May 19, the other two the day before and the day after (here the complete list). We have activated an extraordinary plan to limit the inconvenience of passengers – explains the company -, by rebooking on the first available flights as many travelers as possible involved in the cancellations: 68% will be able to fly on the same day as the strike.

Guarantee bands

Enac reminds that all flights, including charter flights, departing in the time slots 7-10 and 18-21 are guaranteed, all charter flights to/from the islands duly authorized or notified prior to the date of the strike and flights connection with the islands with a single daily frequency with the exclusion of mainland traffic. Not only. Again ENAC reiterates that the arrival at destination of all domestic flights in progress at the time of the start of the strike must in any case be ensured.

Intercontinental flights

Greater guarantees also for intercontinental flights departing from Italy: 14 for the Middle East, 8 for North America (USA, Canada), 10 for Asia, one for Central America/Caribbean, two for South America and one for Africa. Here the ENAC document with guaranteed connections. On average there are 3,600 flights – taking off and landing – every day in our country in this period, according to the most recent data from Eurocontrol.
