Last week, China and Hungary they set up an intergovernmental committee for cooperation on the Silk Road, to give “new impetus to the development of bilateral relations”. The agreement was signed online by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Hungarian counterpart Péter Szijjártó, and Wang said – let’s summarize – that the European Union has a lot to learn from Budapest, that we should look to the Hungarian government to understand how business is done with China. Curious: just a couple of weeks ago Minister Szijjártó visited Italy, and met Industry Minister Adolfo Urso and Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini, of whom Szijjártó said – and here we quote literally: “The whole Europe should be grateful to Salvini”. Szijjártó knows the infrastructure minister well because three years ago, as interior minister, he was the man who signed an important agreement: the granting to Hungary of the rights to a 300-metre extension of the Trieste waterfront for thirty years against a payment of 31 million euros.
