During the summer, the number of Italians and tourists who travel to reach their holiday destination increases. It is also the period in which the municipalities usually collect large sums from the speed cameras installed on the routes usually most used by motorists. The report comes from Assoutenti, which – taking into consideration some road sections that are typically busier during the summer – has highlighted an increase in the presence of vehicle speed meters.

The most exemplary case is that of the 372 Telesina state road which starts from the Caianello tollbooth of the A1 Milan-Naples and arrives in Benevento. Here are some examples collected by Assoutenti: Cavallino recorded an increase in revenue from 0 in 2021 to 2,520,121 euros in 2022 thanks to the speed detection device installed on the 16 Lecce-Maglie state road; Surbo collected 309,580 euros in addition to 720,022 euros in Trepuzzi thanks to the three speed cameras installed on the 613 Lecce-Brindisi state road; the record was set by Melpignano with 2,545,445 euros thanks to the speed cameras on the Lecce-Maglie state road 16. Scattering a road with speed cameras, perhaps positioning them in an inconspicuous way or suddenly and without reason lowering the speed limits, is not the same as guaranteeing the safety of motorists, but it seems more like a convenient expedient to disqualify citizens through road fines, thus obtaining resources to make up for budget holes.

From Lazio to Lake Garda

The association has also noticed a strange case regarding the state road 213 called “Flacca”, in the south of Lazio, dotted with speed cameras: in 13 km there are three in each direction, which in 2022 generated proceeds of over 500 thousand euros. Very high figures even in the mountains: in the Dolomites the small town of Colle Santa Lucia (Bl), with its 340 inhabitants, recorded 349,980 euros in receipts thanks to the speed cameras, while there were many protests over the speed meter installed in Torre del Benaco (VR), the Veronese coast of Lake Garda: 275,519 euros of revenue in 2022. On the Rovereto-Garda route, the navigator shows a journey of just 56 km where about 15 speed camera locations are reported today. In the Bolzano-San Candido stretch (about 100 km) there would be over 10 speed cameras reported today.
