“Italy should ratify the bailout fund in a fairly short period of time, but after we have exchanged views on future developments in the coming years,” says the German finance minister. The government’s road towards the vote in the Chamber

Defining them as a turning point would be excessive, but the words released yesterday by the German Finance Minister undoubtedly convey a climate of confidence, Christian Lindner, on the Italian ratification of the Mes, the European bailout fund has not yet been validated by the government of Giorgia Meloni: “Italy should ratify the treaty in a fairly short period of time”, says Lindner, but “after we have exchanged views on future developments of the coming years”. It’s still: “I am convinced that we will find common ground”.

The only thing missing from the reform of the bailout fund is the approval of the Italian executive. Again last Friday Giorgia Meloniinterviewed by Bruno Vespa, reiterated that he “hasn’t changed his mind” on the merits of the proposal, asking that it be reviewed to transform it into “an instrument for growth”.

Date X, in any case, will be next June 30thwhen the text of the Mes will arrive in the Chamber to be voted on by the Italian Parliament: Lindner’s statements perhaps portend a less stormy eve than expected.
