BARI – While the city is enjoying Christmas, the Bari administration is failing in environmental matters. This, at least, according to the study by the Bari Eco City association, which over the days has called the Decaro administration to pay greater attention to these issues. In the sights of Giuseppe Carrieri, president of the association born in 2019, there are the operations defined as “green washing”.

The presentation of the project had corroborated the debate with the numbers produced compared to 2022. According to the annual report of Legambiente, the city ranks 85th in the urban ecosystem. Separate collection is also greatly undersized. Only 38.3% compared to the 65% required by European standards. Also according to Bari Eco City, even the Apulian aqueduct does not shine, guilty of not having modernized the structures causing 49% of the dispersion of the water network. Fiab cycling municipalities in collaboration with Legambiente then highlighted the lack of cycle paths in the city area, although the Decaro council has heavily invested in sustainable mobility, introducing dedicated paths where there were none. The 40 kilometers of practicability exclusively for cycles, however, place Bari in 58th place. Just 82nd instead for number of trees every 100 inhabitants, only nine. “Enough with green washing”

This is the complaint of the environmental group. “Through citizens’ photos and press articles that have followed one another this year, we have documented the innumerable environmental criticalities of our city,” says Carrieri. «From public mobility through diesel and non-electric vehicles, up to the separate collection of 38% that cries out for revenge. There are cities that are 88%, the urban greenery here is insufficient – continues the president of Bari EcoCity – we have a very low number of trees. There are nine trees per person, an absolutely insufficient number for the inhabitants of Bari». Then a passage on the subject of renewables: «We are behind in many points of view, think of renewable energy on public roofs. Town halls and public buildings can be dedicated to this. These are very low numbers. We need a municipality that does not do green washing but takes care of the urban environment”.
