The European Parliament condemns Italy on homoparental couples, but it is wrong

MEPs point the finger at “the instructions given by the Italian government to the municipality of Milan”. Regardless of how you think about it, the choice to censor a member state’s political act in assembly is a mistake, which could even prove counterproductive

The European Parliament approved an amendment in its plenary session which “condemns the instructions given by the Italian government to the municipality of Milan to no longer register the children of same-parent couples”. Whatever one thinks of the recording in question (and the writer, for that matter, is not adverse at all), the choice to censure a particular political act of an assembly member government is a mistake, which could even prove counterproductive. Italy’s dispute with the European institutions on the registration of children of same-sex couples who are citizens of European countries in which recognition of children is allowed has almost nothing to do with it, given that the registration requests presented in Milan are almost all of Italian citizens. The government has demanded that the law be respected, and of course it has the right to do so. Furthermore, whether the law is open to criticism and needs to be amended is a matter for the Italian Parliament to decide, perhaps encouraged by any sentences of the Constitutional Court.
