Domenico «Mimmo» Lamia-Caputo, the «flying goalkeeper», creator of many competitive battles with his prodigious saves and numerous stopped penalties, is still today the emblem of that blue-and-white football that was. «Unfortunately, football in our city has reached rock bottom – declares the 81-year-old former goalkeeper who also auditioned for Nereo Rocco’s Milan – all of this makes me very sad. In my day there were shrewd and far-sighted entrepreneurs and executives. Today I see I don’t see much interest in wanting to give Trani an organized society and competitive training ».
Lamia-Caputo made his debut just 16 years old in April 1957 during the Serie D championship (then the fourth series) in the away game in Giulianova. «Since I was a kid I dreamed of being able to defend the goal of my hometown team – he says – extremely hard and intense training sessions, on that clay pitch of the historic « Comunale » in via Superga always crowded with fans. The first unforgettable moment was the promotion to Serie C in 1961-62. Then, we reached the apotheosis when we landed in Serie B two years later. An unthinkable and extraordinary goal». The intrepid Lamia-Caputo, an acrobatic goalkeeper who was good between the posts but equally timely in his outings and on high balls, managed to wear the shirt of the Serie C national team, even if in a match against Luxembourg in Reggio Emilia he suffered a serious injury to the knee. «Even though recovery times were rather long and complicated at the time, I returned to the field with greater determination. Thus came the long-awaited debut in Serie B, none other than in the derby against Bari at the «Della Vittoria» stadium on 6 December 1964. It finished 0-0. That Sunday I parried the impossible. Biagio Catalano gave us his credit by missing a penalty. We won 1-0 in the return.” In his career he played a couple of games as a centre-forward. The goal scored in Sulmona in May 1961 is proverbial. Another of the many memories of him is the challenge against Mantova which lined up Dino Zoff between the posts. He also played with Pescara, Pro Vasto, Avellino, Campobasso and Lanciano. The football field has been his whole life. In 1976 he began to be a player-coach, winning the Promozione championship with Trani (’77-’78). «I always carry Trani in my heart – he says with a touch of emotion – I really hope that the blue-and-white colors will return to shine as they once did».
