Wimbledon tournament: the Italians in the program

Two years after he greeted him with his head held high, defeated by Djokovic in the final, Matthew Berrettini will officially put his feet back on the field at Central Wimbledon. He will do it against another n. 1 Carlos Alcaraz who, meanwhile, ousted the Serbian from the world throne. The organizers have set the match as the fourth meeting after two challenges of the women’s round of 16: Haddad Maia (13)-Rybakina (3), who will open the program at 14.30, and Jabeur (6)-Kvitova (9), interspersed with the continuation of the confrontation Between Djokovic and Hurkacz interrupted Sunday evening at 2-0 (7-6, 7-6). As a guideline, the match should start around 7pm. The weather in London predicts sunshine until 4pm when the sky will cloud over: little chance of rain, higher between 7pm and 9pm: the risk is that Berrettini’s match could be interrupted or postponed a few minutes to operate the retractable roof.

Alcaraz leads 2-1 in the previous matches

The duel, especially if Berrettini confirms his growing form, promises entertainment. On the other hand, the 3 precedents between the two have always been full of emotions: in 2021, in the quarterfinals in Vienna (indoor carpet), the Spaniard won 6-1, 6-7 (2/7), 7-6 (7/5). In the 16′ at the 2022 Australian Open, Berrettini redeemed himself by beating his rival 6-2, 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 2-6, 7-6 (7/5). Finally Alcaraz took his revenge a few months later in the quarterfinals on clay in Rio de Janeiro, winning 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. Curiously, therefore, this will be the fourth confrontation on the fourth different surface, certainly Berrettini’s favourite.

Medvedev and Rune on field no. 1, Tsitsipas on no. 2

Two of the other three matches of the men’s round of 16 will be played on pitch no. 1: they will open the program at 2pm Medvedev (3) and Czech Lehecka then, after Alexandrova (21)-Sabalenka (2), it will be a Dimitrov (21) and Runes (6). The last eighth match, the one between the surprising Eubanks And Tsitsipas (5), will be staged on court no. 2, immediately after the women’s singles match between Keys (5) and Andreeva which will kick off the dances of the eighth day at 12.
