The Russian pilot of the Haas team had been blacklisted as the son of an oligarch. The court declared him extraneous to the reasons that had triggered the sanctions

The EU Court has suspended the sanctions decided by the EU against the Russian Formula One driver Nikita Mazepin, son of the oligarch Dmitry. The sentence was published a little while ago, at the end of the precautionary proceedings initiated in the Court by the legal team Davide Rovetta, Massimo Campa and Vincenzo Villante, together with the lawyer Massimo Moretto and Thierry Marembert and Aaron Bass.

Now Nikita Mazepin, a young Russian driver, born in 1999, will be able to participate again in the Formula 1 world championship. Before the start of the 2022 season, Nikita was ousted from the Haas team and from Formula 1 after the sanctions imposed on Russia, because “listed”, as the son of a well-known Russian entrepreneur. For this reason Mazepin had to say goodbye to his career in the premier class. The General Court of the European Union, with an order of the President of the Court dated 1 March 2023 and published today, accepted the defenses drawn up by the team of lawyers and suspended the sanctions and in particular the inclusion in the list of sanctioned subjects of the young driver .

The provision recalls how compliance with European law principles is also protected by the Court on the delicate issue of sanctions against Russia and at the same time allows a young Formula 1 driver not to see his career immediately interrupted, having obtained in the interim the acknowledgment of his extraneousness to the reasons which, in the opinion of the Council of the European Union, had instead motivated his inclusion in the list of sanctioned subjects.
