Of Flavio Vanetti

De Aliprandini competing in the men’s giant: in Cortina he was second. With him Borsotti, Della Vite and Vinatzer. Odermatt is still the favourite, but there are many contenders for a medal. Here is the program and where to see it on TV

After Federica Brignone’s silver in the women’s giant, Italy’s third medal after the gold from the Aosta Valley in the combined and Marta Bassino’s title in the super-G, Italy doesn’t want to stop at the World Cup which is preparing to experience the last few events in Savoy.

Between the wide doors today it’s the males’ turn and the first thought that two years ago in Cortina there was the fine feat of Luca de Aliprandini: he was second behind the French Faivre. Can Trentino repeat itself? Unfortunately after that day of glory Luca didn’t confirm himself at that level and actually came out of the first group of merit in the World Cup trials. But even in 2021 he was all in all an outsider and that day he managed to get everything right: hoping costs nothing. Alongside him, Italy lines up a veteran, John Borsottiand two young men: Philip DellaVitein the year the best giant and potential point of reference for the next few years and perhaps already on the shields on this occasion, and Alex Vinatzerwhich while waiting for its slalom is looking for a dimension even in the competition between the wide doors.

The giant, however, is the specialty in which there is greater uncertainty, even if the obvious favorite is the Swiss champion Marco Odermatt: after the splendid gold in the downhill he aims to do an encore in the discipline which, together with the super-G, is the most congenial for him. But the field of pretenders to the podium, or even gold if Odermatt is wrong, is vast: Kristoffersen, Schwarz, Meillard, Feller, Pinturault, Kranjec, the defending champion Faivre, you’ll be spoiled for choice. At least 15, if not more, are candidates for the medals: all that remains is to wait, with curiosity, for the starting gate to open.

Curiosity: the giant of this World Championship will also be on track

Hubertus von Hohenlohe, born in 1959, son of Ira von Frstenberg
and former personal friend of Andy Warhol. He runs for Mexico (of whose federation he is founder and president) and at his twentieth presence in a world championship.
