After the sensational 2 out of 2 (in the sense of the titles) of the girls, Italy tries to «move» the medal table of the Alpine skiing world championship 2023 also on the male front. The men’s super-G is staged on the Eclipse slope in Courchevel and the blue quartet will be composed of Dominik Paris, Christof Innerhofer, Mattia Casse and Guglielmo Bosca.

Until not so long ago — let’s remember that Paris won the title in 2019 and that Innerhofer had preceded it in 2011, in the World Cup of his three medals — it would have been an appointment with a high probability of satisfaction. But today the music is a little different: after the knee injury in January 2020 Dominik struggled to find the right pace in this specialty, even if the last outing, ten days ago in Cortina, brought him back to the podium (the first ever in the year). As for Innerhofer, who in turn experienced quite a few physical ailments in his competitive “third age”, he repositioned himself (at most) only close to the best. But the great veteran (38 years old) goes on track with good sensations and the second place (behind the Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde) obtained on Wednesday 8 February in the first timed trial of the downhill. Will it be enough? We’ll see, he doesn’t lack the class to amaze.

Having said that Bosca has the role of a pure outsider, the value of Mattia Casse remains to be weighed after the Piedmontese from Oulx has finally broken the ice this season in terms of top results (without having won yet). Our four sprinters, however, are decidedly underdogs in a discipline in which the fight for gold seems to be primarily (or perhaps only) Marco Odermatt (so far in the vintage 4 victories in the 6 super-G disputed) and the aforementioned Kilde. Mikaela Shiffrin’s boyfriend is the only one to have beaten the Swiss champion in the discipline. Who can stop their duopoly? Maybe the Austrian Vincent Kriechmayr, who in 2021 in Cortina teamed up with downhill and is therefore the reigning champion; maybe a Frenchman, thinking first of all‘
Alexis Pinturault who runs at home and who has already taken the title of the combined by building the triumph precisely with the success in the super-G heat; or Canadian James Crawforddiscontinuous but still dangerous.
