The meeting that took place at the Viminale between the world of football and the ministers of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi and of Sport Andrea Abodi and which was attended by the president of the FIGC Gabriele Gravina and the Lega Serie A Lorenzo Casini, the head of the Police Giannini and the President of the Cortis Observatory, opened with an acknowledgment of the fact that the number of incidents and cases of racism and discrimination in the last 4 years has drastically decreased. However, the Ministry underlined that, in addition to evaluating targeted travel bans, greater coordination is needed on the definition of calendars in connection with the Observatory for sporting events. Furthermore, there will be no new regulatory intervention, but we are moving towards restrictive measures with the already existing rules.

Casini: “Stricter prevention measures, yes to facial recognition”

“The Viminale is evaluating the adoption of even more stringent prevention measures than the current ones and proceeding with the investigations on the events that occurred. Now they are being evaluated in the observatory, there will be a meeting and then the Minister of the Interior will evaluate them “. This was stated by Lorenzo Casini, president of Serie A, at the end of the meeting in Viminale with the interior minister Matteo Piantedosi. Table started at 12.30 and lasted just over an hour and which, in addition to Serie A, was also attended by the FIGC president, Gabriele Gravina, and the minister for sport and youth, Andrea Abodi. “It was a very positive meeting and as Lega Serie A we thank the ministers Piantedosi and Abodi, all the participants including the FIGC. The focus? The issue of safety in and outside the stadiums. Data from the last few years has been brought where it emerges that the number of clashes has decreased. This collaboration will proceed in a more intense way”, concluded Casini.

The top management of football has highlighted the need to use the most advanced technologies, including facial recognition, in order to quickly identify those responsible for the clashes. For the restrictive measures against violent supporters – up to the travel ban – the decisions will be taken by the National Observatory on sporting events which meets in the afternoon to analyze the risk profiles of the next matches. As for the non-validation of the deferred arrests of some fans in flagrante delicto, in the assessments of the Viminale, any responsibility for the violence can be ascertained even without the arrest before the trial. For several of the identified fans, the Daspo will still start.
