In recent years, many factors have contributed to increasing awareness of the importance of communicating science. The media have found that the research also attracts the attention of the general public. Scientific journalism has therefore acquired more and more interest, especially for the many topics that have become topical, from the pandemic to the Higgs boson, which require greater study and scientific culture. Precisely for this reason we have decided to carry out this workshop, which will be preparatory to the possible creation of an advanced training course and subsequently a master’s degree in scientific journalism, which will be the first in all of Southern Italy. This was stated by Prof. Salvatore Magaz, Dean of Physics at the Mift of the University of Messina, who organized a workshop entitled “Scientific Journalism in the present day” together with the Byto company, the journalist and parliamentary spokesman Antonio Ivan Bellantoni, and the journalist Gianluca Rossellini. , which saw the participation of important speakers, including Marco Frittella, editorial director of Rai Libri and former presenter of Tg1 and “Unomattina”; Barbara Carfagna, presenter of Tg1 and author-presenter of the program “Codice: digital life” on Rai Uno; Romolo Sticchi, Tg3 Special Correspondent and curator of the “Pixel” format on Rai Tre.
The workshop
A very positive aspect – said Magaz again – that the demand for scientific information grows. Scientific news is covering more and more spaces in newspapers, television and radio stations or on the web. The company requests more information. The scientific communities in turn ask to be able to communicate with the many audiences that share in a growing number of relevant choices for the development of research and the knowledge society. Science journalism schools are also increasing and, consequently, the number of professionals who are very well trained in science communication. Above all, it is necessary to analyze the topics covered in physics and in the other so-called ‘hard sciences’ more rigorously, but at the same time spread news with simple and clear terms for most people. Frittella, Carfagna and Sticchi who were awarded for their professional commitment, said they were enthusiastic about the creation of the Advanced Training Course, reiterating the need for competent journalism, attentive to new technologies and which follows a ‘scientific’ method in analysis and choice of news. Also present were Carmelo Picciotto President of Confcommercio Messina, Giuseppe Ruggeri doctor and journalist, Giovanni Pioggia Head of Irib-Cnr of Messina) Dimitri Salonia Artist and Scientific Communicator Mariateresa Caccamo Researcher Mift, and journalists Gianluca Rossellini and Antonio Ivan Bellantoni.
