TO June Naples will host, in the Royal Palace, an important international conference of UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Theme: the future of the World Heritage Site 50 years after the establishment of the convention on the protection of material assets (archaeological, monumental sites and sites of particular landscape value) and 20 from that of intangible assets. In short, the Declaration on the future of heritage will start from the Mediterranean capital. Promoter of the Neapolitan candidacy, in agreement with the Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, is the Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano who, in the next few hours, will be in Paris, the headquarters of the Agency, precisely to meet the Unesco executives. The latter’s intervention was decisive, with the go-ahead from his government colleague, for moving the meeting from Florence to the shadow of Vesuvius. Hundreds of delegates expected. A visit to the excavations of Pompeii and an evening at the San Carlo theater will be organized for the guests. Naples will therefore once again be at the center of international attention for an appointment of absolute prestige. Moreover, for about thirty years the capital of Campania has been considered worthy of protection by UNESCO. In fact, since 1995, the World Heritage Site has included the historic centre, a place where there are signs of cultural stratification starting from the time of Magna Graecia. The area under protection extends for about 17 square kilometers, represents about 15 percent of the urban area and, precisely because of its extension, is considered the largest historic center in Europe. And that’s not enough. More recently, starting from 2017, the art of the Neapolitan pizza maker has also been admitted to the list that brings together the intangible assets recognized as worthy of protection on a par with physical places.

In a broader perspective, all of Campania is considered by UNESCO to be a veritable treasure trove of material and immaterial values to be preserved. Among the first, there are the Vesuvius archaeological areas: in particular, the archaeological sites of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Oplontis (in Torre Annunziata) are included in the Heritage. Another pearl considered the Royal Palace of Caserta, with the Vanvitellian Aqueduct and the monumental complex of San Leucio which housed the Bourbon silk factories. Also worthy of particular attention is the territory of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, which includes the temples of Paestum, the city of Velia, the cradle of Eleatic thought attributable to giants of philosophy such as Parmenides and Zeno. In Benevento, therefore, the star-shaped Church of Santa Sofia represents an admirable testimony of the Lombard art of the area. In addition to the art of pizza makers, UNESCO decided in 2013 to include the network of the so-called machines of the Saints in the intangible heritage, which includes 4 religious festivals including that of the Lilies of Nola which is celebrated on 22 June or the first following Sunday in honor of the local patron, Saint Paulinus. Two more prestigious entries: the Mediterranean diet, theorized by the American physiologist Ancel Keys who studies the beneficial effects on health of the eating habits practiced by the Cilento populations; last, but only in chronological order, is the ancient practice of transhumance, i.e. the seasonal movement of livestock in the Lacedonia area. With ten awards, Campania is one of the regions most considered by the United Nations. It is precisely for this reason that the Conference will be an unmissable opportunity to reaffirm cultural identity.
