The two components of the Smorfia recall the great artist with a project

Is called That is (‘), an acronym for calembour, which stands for Interdisciplinary Center for Expressive Opportunities. And the Academy designed by Lello Arena (with the collaboration of Enzo Decaro and strongly desired by the mayor Gaetano Manfredi) to remember his friend and stage partner Massimo Troisi. One hundred participants to study acting/creative writing, music/singing, dance/choreographic movement, performers (street artists)/circus art: for three months, in Naples, completely free, one hundred young people will have the opportunity to train in the name of Troisi.

Thus began, therefore, the celebrations in memory of Troisi who would have turned 70 on 19 February. With a reunion (the Corriere del Mezzogiorno had anticipated it) between, unfortunately, only two of the La Smorfia trio, precisely Arena and Decaro. Who, however, have decided to look to the future and to the new generations of artists and therefore to help them. From today, January 30, until February 19, Troisi’s birthday, it will be possible to apply by sending an email to [email protected] with personal data: name, surname, date of birth, residence, a photo and attaching a video file of the maximum duration of 1 minute with the performance (from a dancer, street artist, musician, actor, singer). To participate you must be of legal age with no maximum age limit. The commitment will take place between February and May and four classes will be formed in the groups of artistic disciplines identified; each class for each discipline will have its own reference teacher. Several artists will be involved in the project, including Vincenzo Salemme, Nicola Piovani, Arturo Brachetti, Roberto Colella, as well as Lello Arena and Enzo Decaro (but other names will be announced in the following days) and a series of national trade associations. At the end of the training course, eight productions will be made with live events taking place in August in Piazza Plebiscito in Naples. All the shows produced and staged will be dedicated to La Smorfia taking into account the historicity and taking inspiration from their texts.

Being an artist is not a job that can be done only for oneself. a social profession. It is done for others. It must necessarily serve the Community. The task of an artist – says Arena – is to act as an intermediary between the ideas, melodies, concepts, thoughts imagined by the most wonderful minds that mankind has ever conceived in order to make them available to everyone. With this spirit was born Cioe (`). And Decaro adds: Exactly as at the time when La Smorfia was born, simultaneously with all the beautiful, and still today unsurpassed theatrical, musical and artistic expressions of Naples in those years, the watchword increasingly “cooperation”, doors open to thought that circulates, in the salvific tradition of passing `research tools and experiential seeds of beauty.. This, as far as I am concerned, is the truest and most necessary meaning of `That is().
