Traveling without a car in Italy is growing: between bikes and scooters, green vehicles are spreading but resistance remains

Trends matter more than overall data. Even if the preferred means of travel remains thecaramong European citizens there is a growing tendency to opt for alternative and decidedly more sustainable solutions, with Italy that stands out for its sensitivity on issues related to personal health and environmental protection. What emerges from the first edition of theAuto & Mobility Barometer edited by Ipsos and Europ Assistance.

The main evidences

According to the research, Italy is in first place for car owners (97%), ahead of Portugal (92%), but more and more people, especially after the pandemic, they prefer to walk: 96% of the sample expressed themselves this way, two points more than the average of the other countries. Italy ranks fourth, after Spain, Portugal and France, for the incidence of new users of alternative micromobility tools.

The number of those who choose sustainable means is growing, such as bicycle (52%) and the scooter (26%), also in this case with higher values ​​than the average. The growing importance attributed to the personal healthbut also the awareness that cars make an important contribution to air pollution.

So far the good news, but the survey also shows that there are many who say they are unwilling to abandon their car, even if Italians prove to be among the most inclined to do so (41% of those interviewed expressed this ).

The bike is better

The survey also signals a widespread propensity to reduce the frequency of travel ea prefer walking or cyclingwith a decrease in car sharing and other shared mobility solutions: two out of three European families have at least one type of bicycle, with our country substantially aligned (67%). As for thee-bikesis used by 20% of Europeans, but the incidence rises to 33% among adults up to 34 years of age.

From the point of view insurance, the research shows that the choice of the company to rely on when buying a car depends primarily on the price, followed by reliability. The services considered most important are roadside assistance and replacement vehicle: in Italy, respectively, 87% and 84% of the sample expressed themselves. At the foot of the podium is the tracking of the stolen vehicle (81%).

In Italy, the means of sustainable mobility (bicycle and micromobility) are still underinsured, but 65% of two-wheelers declare themselves ready to do so and the inhabitants of the Peninsula are the most interested in Europe (53%) in policies based on the person, i.e. covering all journeys, regardless of the vehicle used.
