Writers who narrate the contemporary world: Louis-Ferdinand Cline (1894-1961) was certainly one of these, since he embodied and recounted in his novels the anger and misery of the man (and soldier) of his time, caught in the meat grinder of two world wars. He talks about it Emmanuel Carrre in the broad focus with which the new issue of Reading opens.

The #603, on Saturday 17 in the App and Sunday 18 June on the newsstands, features an interview by Stefano Montefiori with Carrreto an extensive dialogue between Paul Jordan and another French storyteller, douard Louis. In the Montefiori interview, Carrre reflects on the writing of Cline, whose novel has just been rediscovered in Italy too, War (Adelphi). He admires the modernity of the prose, the word capable of describing the horrors of the battlefields and pity for some aspects of human frailty.

Carrre notes the prodigy of Cline’s language but also underlines the frantic anti-Semitic harangues, in which the literary level drops a lot, and the sentences become only curses and little more. Cline, as well as Carrre, was also an autobiographical narrator. Even the young man devoted most of his novels to his autobiography douard Louisborn in 1992, already in his sixth book: Paul Jordananother author who made his debut at a very young age (he won the Strega Prize at the age of 26) and who experimented with a sort of autofiction in Tasmania (Einaudi), meets him in Paris and converses with him starting from the new novel Method to become another (The ship of Theseus).

Young authors are also the winners of the last three world poetry slam championships, all three Italians, to whom the extensive conversation curated by Daniele Piccini is dedicated: they are Philip Capobiancoworld champion 2023, Lorenzo Maragoni (sample 2022) e Julian Logos (2021 sample). They tell the meaning of spoken poetry and the spirit of the all-word competition of poetry slam, which can bring children closer to literature. And to follow, Roberto Galaverni returns to a poetic master of the twentieth century, Vittorio Sereni, of whom Mondadori reproposes All poems 110 years after his birth and 40 after his death.

Story tellers, in Reading, also outside of fiction and within the other arts. Photography, for example. The one of Mario Cresci, to which two exhibitions are dedicated, at the Maxxi in Rome (until 1 October) and at the Monastery of Astino in Bergamo (until 5 November): the photographer tells Stefano Bucci. Or the stage, with the show Thucydides. Athens versus Melos Of Alexander Baricco, with the music of Giovanni Sollima, which debuts at the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto on 29 June: the writer and the musician tell, in the interview with Alessia Rastelli, the staging with 90 cellos, the symbolic strength of a tragic episode of the Peloponnesian war, which took place in 416 BC, a warning about the cruelty of war. Four pages are dedicated to the Umbrian review (June 23-July 9), with articles by Helmut Failoni, Valeria Crippa and Laura Zangarini.

The final section, finally, screened on Passages Festival, the review of Fano, in the Marche region, which takes place from 21 to 25 June and about which Jessica Chia writes. In preview, the graphic novel by Marco Ceccolini, which won the comic book competition A Reading in the clouds, chosen by a jury chaired by Rita Petruccioliinterviewed by Chiara Severgnini.
