The Viareggio Tournament returns home: the Ferracci plant in Torre del Lago is ready

After 5 years of absence the Viareggio Cup, one of the most important youth football tournaments in the world, will be returning “home” starting from the 2023 edition. He will not do it in the historic Stadio dei Pini, closed due to unavailability since 30 June 2018, but inside the Ferracci stadium in Torre del Lago, that the only hamlet of the Viareggio area. On the day when the administration led by the mayor Giorgio Del Ghingaro announces the start of the refurbishment and compliance of the Torrelagese facility – currently used by a local rugby team, but not approved for football – the commissioner municipal sport Rodolfo Salemi officially announces news that certainly please all sportsmen, Viareggio and not. Next year the Torre del Lago facility will host the tournament’s inaugural match and the grand final, the two most emblematic matches. The Viareggio Cup – says Salemi – returns home: iThe international youth football tournament is a heritage of our city and could not be played far from its municipality for another edition. Thus, while waiting for the Pini stadium to reopen, in agreement with the youth football center organizing the event, Coni and Figc, we have planned the necessary interventions to return to play football at the Ferracci stadium as early as 2023. From the following month of April, then, also Viareggio Calcio and Torrelaghese will be able to play their home games in this facility. Bringing the main matches of the tournament back to town – the commissioner ends – it has a multiple meaning, of image, visibility but also of induced. With the CGC we work to bring the teams back to our hotels and to a calendar that includes as many matches as possible in the area.

The Ferracci

Currently the structure of Torre del Lago has a grandstand with a capacity of about 400 seats, but the Municipality and the CGC are studying the possibility of setting up, during the days of the tournament, also a temporary staircase, in order to increase the capacity itself. The works announced by the Municipality on the “Ferracci” provide for the rehabilitation of the changing rooms and technical rooms, the construction of a certified fence to divide the area where the sporting activity takes place from that intended for the public, an electrical system including insulation of the lines and the maintenance of the grassy field.

The Pini Stadium

As revealed by the councilor, the choice of the “Ferracci” is only provisional, aimed at anticipating the return times of the tournament to the municipality of Viareggio, while waiting for the historic city facility to return to its former glory. Closed for almost 4 and a half years due to structural problems that have made it unusable, the Pini stadium awaits the start of the recovery project which for an amount of over 9 million euros will see the rearrangement of the central grandstand, the reconstruction of the steps (demolished in 2020), the light towers, the pitch and the athletics track, to then return to its former glory. In fact, in the past, the “Pini” were the site of an important athletics meeting for several years. But these works, between assignment and execution, will require timing that would not have made it possible to reopen the plant for the 2023 edition (and perhaps not even for the 2024 edition) of the Viareggio Cup. at the Ferracci stadium in Torre del Lago.

The glory

The tournament, once known as the “Carnival Cup”, boasts a more than ten-year tradition (72 editions have been played so far, with an obligatory break due to covid in 2020 and 2021) which saw some of the greatest football champions pass through Viareggio Italian and worldwide such as Alessandro Del Piero, Gianluigi Buffon, Francesco Totti, Gabriel Batistuta, Christian Vieri or Ciro Immobile and Gigio Donnarumma, to stay in the recent past. A tournament full of prestige and glory, which had to be separated from the city that gave it its name (in 2019 the main field was that of La Spezia, this year the final was held in Forte dei Marmi), which soon to be able to embrace again.
