The new issue of «la Lettura», #580, previewed on the App on Saturday 7 and on newsstands on Sunday 8 January, opens with a cover by Iranian artist Maziar Mokhtari, who expresses solidarity with the struggle of women in Iran: a braid of hair «cut» from the verse of the poet and mystic Hafez, from the 14th century, which says «Grab your hair and cut it». Mokhtari’s works (with the series dedicated to Iranian women) can be seen in Rome, as part of the installation You too will be an amphora one day, at Studio G; in the App of «la Lettura», the Roman exhibition is the protagonist of the Theme of the Day on Saturday 7 January, signed by Paolo Conti.

The opening of the supplement is dedicated to theAida by Giuseppe Verdi, a blockbuster by the Rome Opera which will be on stage from 31 January to 12 February. It is the love story between two enemies, an Ethiopian slave princess and an Egyptian soldier, for which the white sopranos have often resorted to blackface, black make-up on the face, a practice considered racist in the United States. In Rome, on the other hand, all the performers will have their faces painted in different colors, to capture the multi-ethnic theme of the work. The director Michele Mariotti, the director David Livermore and the soprano Krassimira Stoyanova talk about it in «la Lettura», in a conversation curated by Helmut Failoni, who stage the opera in Rome, joined by Russell Thomas, first tenor black to interpret Othelloand jazz musician Uri Caine.

In the Books, the opening is dedicated to the gothic saga Blackwater by Michael McDowell, released 40 years ago in the US and now proposed for the first time in Italy, in 6 volumes, by Neri Pozza: it will be released in a special format and with an unusual timing, one volume every 15 days from 17 January; Severino Colombo writes about it. Of another rediscovery, the novel Kallocaine (Hyperborea) by Karin Boye, is handled by Vanni Santoni.
