The Restoration law must be approved, it is essential for our well-being

[ad_1]

The European Parliament is examining, on a proposal from the Commission, a Regulation – the “Nature Restoration Law” – which implements measures for the ecological restoration of at least 20% of the land and marine areas of the EU, by 2030, and of all ecosystems that need it, by 2050. Good ecological status, already defined at Community level for the areas protected by the “Habitats” directive, would thus be extended to terrestrial, coastal and freshwater ecosystems that need to be restored, according to criteria to be defined. Particular and appropriate attention is dedicated by the new Regulation to the protection and increase of urban and peri-urban green infrastructures, to the elimination of river barriers, to the reconnectivity between rivers and alluvial areas, to the improvement of the biodiversity of agricultural and forest ecosystems and to reverse the decline of pollinators.

Like any legislative proposal, this Regulation too can be improved and amended, but we believe that, overall, it is an important and positive provision, to be approved quickly because it goes in the right direction: that of replenishing and maintaining natural capital, biodiversity, its regenerative capacity and its resilience. These are indispensable factors for our well-being and that of future generations, for the present and the future of our economies, for the mitigation and adaptation to the climate crisis.

Who doesn’t like the European Nature Restoration Law that wants to save biodiversity

For Italy, this Regulation is of particular and relevant interest. In fact, Italy has a natural capital of extraordinary importance which is subjected to worrying pressures, to many phenomena of degradation and to the growing impacts of the climate crisis. A natural capital that needs to be restored in some of its parts, which needs to be made more resilient with respect to the climate crisis, increasingly protected and enhanced with regenerative management, because it is the essential basis of our well-being, because it provides a wide and irreplaceable range of services ecosystems and fuels key economic activities. Our quality agriculture, our prestigious agri-food chains known throughout the world, tourism and all its enormous related industries, as well as a large part of Made in Italy, are closely linked to and dependent on the extraordinary quality, diversity and richness of landscapes and ecosystems in our area. It is important to support this European proposal for the restoration and better resilience and protection of this natural heritage, avoiding underestimating, for small short-sighted and wrong calculations, the growth of environmental awareness and commitment by now established in the world of Italian companies.

For these reasons we ask you to support the approval of the Nature Restoration Law in the European Parliament.
