The Italy of tennis reopens in Cagliari, and adds a stage in Turin. From 1 to 7 May, as a rich appetizer of the Internationals which this year at the Foro Italico will cover two weeks (from 10 to 21 May) in the hometown of the President of Fitp Binaghi on the fields of TC Cagliari, the first edition of a Super Challenger worth 175 thousand dollars, the «Sardegna Open» while another ‘175’ – the category is new for the ATP calendar, the «Piemonte Open Intesa San Paolo», is scheduled in Turin in the second week of the Roman Masters 1000. If we also consider the WTA in Palermo, the new 125 WTA which will take place in Florence, the NexT Gen Finals, the ATP Finals in Turin and the September Davis Cup round in Bologna – plus the myriad of other so-called ‘minor’ events – Italy’s 2023 tennis offer is truly rich. The director of the tournament in Cagliari will be the former davisman Paolo Lorenzi: «I have a special memory of Sardinia – he said – It was 2004 and I played in Olbia in one of the first Challenger tournaments of my career. For this reason this region has always held a special place in my heart. Cagliari enthusiasts are very competent and for them this Challenger 175 represents another special occasion to be able to admire up close the best Italian tennis players and the big names in world tennis who will then be engaged on the courts of the Foro Italico the following week». The mayor of Paolo Truzzu Cagliari recalled that «in Monte Urpinu, home of the Cagliari Tennis Club, exciting Davis Cup matches and tournaments were played which saw the participation of the best promises of blue tennis. For this reason I would like to sincerely thank the President Angelo Binaghi and the FITP for having strongly wanted Cagliari as the site of the “Sardinia Open”. The tournament will also start on May 1st, a special day for all of us for the traditional feast of Sant’Efisio».

A season which, as Binaghi recalled, also includes the ‘P’ which has been added to the federal denomination since 1 January, the P of Padel: in fact, the second edition of Italy is scheduled for 17 to 21 July at the Foro Italico Premier Padel Major. «Another season of great events in Italian tennis opens – explains Binaghi -, which will accompany us throughout the year, through an unprecedented edition of the Internazionali d’Italia, up to the grand finale in Turin. The events, ever greater and more important, are the thermometer of our growth, to which the very strong push of the padel is now added. The events we organize enhance and enrich the territories that host them, and contribute to the growth of our movement».
