The former skater Kostomarov is dying

Ice skater Roman Kostomarov is in desperate health: his legs and arms were amputated and he suffered a stroke. Now he is in intensive care undergoing plasmapheresis (blood purification) for infection.

Gold at the Turin 2006 Olympics (paired with Tatiana Navka), Kostomarov, 46, is a legend of skating. After retiring, he continued to perform. But in January he performed outdoors in very low temperatures and shortly after was urgently hospitalized with a very high fever. Bilateral pneumonia, infection all over his body, he lost consciousness, went into an artificial coma and had his feet and then his hands amputated. He had a stroke with severe brain damage, an infracerebral hematoma with an acute phase in the frontal lobe, gray and white matter lesions.

The lungs therefore gave way: the right one doesn’t work and the left one accumulates fluid, also due to the reduced functionality of the kidneys.

The clinical situation, already serious, seems increasingly compromised. His wife Oksana Domnina invites everyone to prayer.
