Of Paul Mereghetti

The awards are once again the antechamber of the Oscars and everything suggests that Spielberg and Farrell have what it takes to get the statuettes

At 76 years old Steven Spielberg he is crowned again best director by the foreign press accredited in Hollywood which awards him his third Golden Globe (in addition to the career achievement one in 2008) in the only category that does not make distinctions between narrative types and also awards his latest film, «The Fabelmans », as best drama film of the year. The perfect viaticum to prepare for March 12, when Oscars will be awarded where the story of his cinematographic vocation (because the protagonist Sammy Fabelman is openly the young Spielberg) could win him his second Oscar for directing.

The other winner of the evening is “Spirits of the Island” (here the list of all the awards), which we will soon see also in Italy, not only best film in the comedian or musical category, but winner with Colin Farrell in the equivalent acting category and with Martin McDonagh for the screenplay (the latter being the same awards that the film had also collected at the Venice Film Festival).

And it comes to think that it will be these two films to play the best cards for the statuettes of the Academy Awards, with the third wheel of Cate Blanchett for her role in «Tár», who won the Golden Globe for Best Dramatic Performer last night. In short, having set aside the controversies that had risked downgrading the award, the accolades of the foreign press have returned to what they have always been for this eightieth edition: the antechamber to the most important prize of cinema, the Oscar statuette.

An indication that may also apply to the title that triumphed in the category of non-English language films (those that were once foreign films) where it was chosen «Argentina, 1985»directed by Santiago Miter and produced by Amazon.

One last note. Limited to the film on the trial of Argentine coup leaders and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, best animated film produced by Netflix, the booty of the greats masters of streaming is decidedly small (neither «Blonde» nor «The Whale» nor «Glass Onion: Knives Out» received any awards) and this too is an indication that should not be underestimated, all in favor of the films that can be seen “only at the cinema” (at least in the first months of life), as were «Elvis», which made its protagonist Austin Butler win the award for best dramatic actor, «Everything Everywhere All at Once» which brought Michelle Yeoah to the podium (best actress in a comedy film or musical) and Ke Huy Quan (best supporting actor) and «Black Panther: Wakanda Forever» with the award to Angela Bassett for best supporting actress. An indication of productive pride which hopefully will infect more and more the public, not just the Americans.
