Of Daniel Go away

a replica of Schumacher’s 2005 single-seater, in dire condition from a scrap yard in Bulgaria. But it’s worth very little

Seeing her like this makes my heart beat. A Ferrari F1 parked in the wreckage of a car wrecker, front wing dangling, black plastic bags and other bits and pieces around. The photo has been circulating on the internet since mid-January, taken in Eastern Europe, most likely on the outskirts of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria.

The car is in disastrous conditions and would certainly have deserved another arrangement, even if from certain details it can be understood that it has nothing to do with the real single-seaters driven by Schumacher and Barrichello in the golden era of the Cavallino. Whose quotations among collectors reach record figures: in November an F2003-GA (dedicated to Gianni Agnelli) changed hands for 14.5 million dollars. They are perfectly maintained racing cars and able to go on the track (without an engine the value drops drastically), the rich people who buy them join the Ferrari F1 customer program. When they want to ride, they book a circuit (or if they have it booked) and a team of mechanics arrives from Maranello to assist them.

The one in the Bulgarian photo, on the other hand, is a maquette, one of those exhibition cars (without mechanical elements), a model that takes up the 2005 F1, the single-seater with which Schumacher won only one race, handing over the world champion scepter to the young Fernando Alonso .

In its heyday the replica was so, very different from an original Rossa. With logos and sponsors faithfully reproduced, but with sensational ingenuity: like the graphics of the number 1 which recalls that of children’s toy cars. But maybe in some pub or restaurant he would have ended up better than that corner of the landfill.
