The anxiety of wanting to appear politically correct at all costs often leads to writing nonsense. It happened on ThursdayAssociated Press, glorious American news agency, which in an effort to help its editors avoid potentially stigmatizing expressions has caused an uproar. The following tweet appeared on the agency’s Stylebook profile, a manual in which editorial advice is regularly distilled: “We recommend avoiding generic and often dehumanizing labels such as ‘the poor’, ‘the mentally ill’, ‘the French’ , ‘the disabled’, ‘graduates’. We rather use expressions such as ‘people with mental illness’”.
