The fight against climate change and decarbonization are urgent needs with which we must necessarily deal, determined to multiply our efforts to implement a paradigm shift that can guarantee effective and lasting results. For some time now, institutional and scientific debates have been accompanied by an ever-growing awareness, especially on the part of the new generations, regarding the need to implement sustainable consumption models to mitigate the impact of human activities on the Earth.

The reduction of the exploitation of natural resources and the transition towards a circular economy require a collective commitment, from politics to public and private bodies, from companies to businesses, up to citizens. Respect for the environment, in fact, also passes through small daily gestures and the choices made every day are the first step in reversing the trend. Technology and digitization play a decisive role in the implementation of this process and it is essential that electronic devices are developed not only with performance and ease of use in mind, but also with the protection of the planet.

Acer is moving decisively in this direction, whose products are developed to ensure a reduced environmental impact throughout their life cycle. A concrete example of PCs designed with particular attention to the environment comes from the Vero line, with a complete range of devices, from notebooks to desktops, monitors, projectors and accessories. The Vero series devices are all made with recycled plastics from waste materials from domestic, commercial and industrial facilities and feature an unpainted chassis. They are all designed according to sustainability criteria, testifying to the company’s ongoing commitment to building a more sustainable future through solutions designed with intelligence and attention to even the smallest detail. They are also easy to disassemble, repair and upgrade, so they last longer without compromising performance quality.

Even the packaging follows the principles of ecology: the outer box is made from recycled paper and the remaining packaging is 100% recyclable. Acer has also investigated a method to remove unnecessary adhesive tape from packaging, reducing the amount of unsorted waste.

Acer’s commitment to sustainability has solid roots and guides corporate governance decisions, including relations with employees, partners and suppliers. The group, one of the world leaders in the ICT sector, started using green energy as early as 2011 and in 2012 it imposed lower limits on carbon emissions, reducing them by 60% in 2020. It recently joined the RE100 programme, with the stated goal of sourcing from 100% renewable energy sources by 2035.

Efforts to facilitate the ambitious process towards the creation of a sustainable model are demonstrated by the Project Humanity initiative, launched in 2017 to encourage “green” behavior among employees, starting with small daily gestures, such as avoiding leaving devices standby and print double-sided documents.

The natural evolution of Project Humanity is the Earthion programme, with which the company has involved partners and suppliers in the adoption of good practices in the fields of production, logistics, recycling and packaging redesign, which in 2020 alone has made it possible to save 20 million of plastic bags.

In line with its environmental commitment, at a local level Acer has offered its support to the Marevivo association as part of the RePlant pilot project, which envisages the replanting of marine flora on the seabed in the Aurisina area, in the Gulf of Trieste. Equally important is the commitment to electronic waste management: thanks to the collaboration with Erion, last year in Italy Acer collected, differentiated and recycled several thousand tons of materials, avoiding the introduction of 2,310 tons of CO2 equivalent in the environment. The balance between environmental stewardship and product durability represents a major challenge, in which Acer unites employees, partners and consumers to make a real difference.
