After the arrest of the chief referee prosecutor accused of drug trafficking, the position of the top referees becomes increasingly delicate, with the specter of the commissioner in the background

The fury of the Football Association on the one hand, on the other, the position of the top referees which is becoming more and more delicate by the hour, with the specter of the commissioner in the background. In between, the credibility of a system that has suffered a very hard blow, difficult to repair, also because it inevitably involves the whole world of football.

The absurd story of the arrest of “Rambo” D’Onofrio, chief prosecutor of whistles by day and drug trafficker by night, is having the effect of an institutional storm. An emergency federal council has been convened for tomorrow in Rome “for political reflection”. A summit that promises to be fiery, with the president of the Football Federation, Gravina, who wants to get to the bottom of the question. The explanation in The Hague on Saturday evening, which in fact discharges the responsibility by saying that it was D’Onofrio who failed to report the arrest, was not considered convincing. The top referees continue to firmly reiterate that they have never had the slightest doubt about D’Onofrio“Not even an anonymous phone call”, swear from the building, even if they cannot explain how no one had noticed the absence of the chief prosecutor during the arrest in 2020.

The referees, who also suspect overhead cover, are in the eye of the storm. Who expected the resignation of the president Trentalange and his deputy Baglioni was disappointed: they have no intention. This is why the commissioner is one of the scenarios. Difficult to arrive tomorrow, because the cards requested from federal prosecutor Chiné the DDA will probably not arrive in time. The documents will be examined to understand if incorrect behavior emerges. Until then, the impasse will last. Moreover, with the decapitated arbitration prosecutor, since “Rambo” has not yet been replaced. In the meantime, however, something can change as early as tomorrow, given that an old project will be put back on the table in the council: to bring the administration of justice of the referees, hitherto autonomous, back under the management of the FIGC.
