Rome is preparing to welcome the Giro d'Italia with an exhibition

Through the spokes of a bicycle you can also read the country. This is what the exhibition IL GIRO proposes. A history of Italy hosted at the Museum of Rome in Trastevere from 24 May to 18 June. An unedited photographic body – more than one hundred images – taken in large part from the Riccardi Historical Archive, which tells, from 1909 to today, a very significant cross-section of Italy.

The exhibition itinerary winds its way not only through the great protagonists of the Giro d’Italia – from Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali, passing through Gimondi, Moser and Saronni up to Marco Pantani and Vincenzo Nibali – but, through the shots, also traces the evolution of this splendid sport, rediscovering a passion made up of chases and falls, sprint victories and grueling climbs fixed in the collective memory of several generations. An entire country united around its heroes, followed with their gaze from the roadsides, followed by the radios or televisions that lit up the kitchens of the houses. Snapshots of a bygone era, but very current, in which Rome often appears as a wonderful scenography.

The exhibition is promoted by Roma Capitale, with the contribution of the Department of Major Events, Sport, Tourism and Fashion in collaboration with the Department of Culture and the Capitoline Superintendency of Cultural Heritage, and is organized by AGR srl in collaboration with Archivio Storico Riccardi, with the support of Enel, partner of the Maglia Rosa, and of RCS Sports & Events. Edited by Maurizio Riccardi and Giovanni Currado. Project coordination by Stefano Di Traglia. Organizational support of Zètema Progetto Cultura.
