Roland Garros 2023: Sonego challenges Khachanov, Musetti against Alcaraz

For “Muso” there is the scent of “best ranking”.
Sonego challenges Khachanov: the precedents
In the match that opens the program (11 am) on the “Suzanne Lenglen” Sonegon.48 ATP, has to contend with the Russian Karen Khachanov, n.11 of the ranking and seeding. The 27-year-old Muscovite leads 2-1 in his previous meetings with the 28-year-old from Turin: he won in three sets in the second round of the 2018 US Open (hard) and in the first round of the 2019 Internazionali BNL d’Italia (clay) while the blue won in the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 (clay) also in 2019. Khachanov is in his eighth participation in the French Slam, the seventh in the main draw, and in his sixth qualification for the round of 16: only once he surpassed them, in 2019, when he beat Del Potro before giving in to Thiem in the quarterfinals (on other occasions it was Murray, Zverev, Djokovic and Alcaraz who stopped him). For the Piedmontese, on the other hand, it is the sixth presence in Paris, the fifth in the main draw where he had also reached the round of 16 in 2020 (stopped by Schwartzman). Last year he was eliminated in the third round after leading two sets to one against Ruud (later reached the final). In Paris, “Sonny” beat the American Ben Shelton, n.36 in the ranking and 30 in the seeding, in four sets. In the second round he repeated it by beating the French Humbert, n.40 in the ranking, in three sets. Then the amazing comeback against the Russian Rublev, n.7 in the ranking and seeding, signing the first victory over a top-ten in a Major, the sixth overall. For virtual Lorenzo he returns to the top 40 (n.39).
