It’s the day of Lorenzo Sonego And Lorenzo Musetti at Roland Garros. Objective for the quarterfinals for the last two Azzurri left in the Slam competition on red clay Paris. Both, however, are expected to face difficult matches. The first to take the field is Sonego, who after beating Rublev in five sets finds another Russian on his way, Karen Khachanov. The task awaiting Lorenzo Musetti was even more difficult, called upon to take on the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraznumber one in the world.

Musetti-Alcaraz: the precedents

In the third match (starting at 11 am) on the “Philippe Chatrier” Lorenzo Musettiworld number 18 and 17th seed, faces the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, n.1 in the world ranking and first seed of the tournament. The balance of the precedents is equal, with Carlos scoring in three sets in the semifinals of the Challenger of Trieste in 2020 and Lorenzo winning the final of the ATP 500 in Hamburg (first title for the carrarino) in July 2022, always on “red”. For the 20-year-old from El Palmar (Murcia) and the third presence in the Parisian main draw (the fourth overall) where he has already reached the quarterfinals last year, stopped by “Sascha” Zverev. It is the third Roland Garros, however, for the Tuscan Next Gen: in 2021 he was stopped in the round of 16 by Djokovic (after being ahead two sets to zero against the world number one, he was forced to retire in the middle of the fifth set due to an injury), last year by Tsitsipas, always in the fifth set and always after winning the first two. In his debut, the 21-year-old from Carrara defeated the Swede Mikhael Ymer, n.56 ATP in three sets: therefore he left just four games to the Russian Shevchenko, n.87 in the ranking, for the first time on the field in Paris, and seven at the British Norrie, No.13 ATP and 14th seed. For “Muso” there is the scent of “best ranking”.

Sonego challenges Khachanov: the precedents

In the match that opens the program (11 am) on the “Suzanne Lenglen” Sonegon.48 ATP, has to contend with the Russian Karen Khachanov, n.11 of the ranking and seeding. The 27-year-old Muscovite leads 2-1 in his previous meetings with the 28-year-old from Turin: he won in three sets in the second round of the 2018 US Open (hard) and in the first round of the 2019 Internazionali BNL d’Italia (clay) while the blue won in the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 (clay) also in 2019. Khachanov is in his eighth participation in the French Slam, the seventh in the main draw, and in his sixth qualification for the round of 16: only once he surpassed them, in 2019, when he beat Del Potro before giving in to Thiem in the quarterfinals (on other occasions it was Murray, Zverev, Djokovic and Alcaraz who stopped him). For the Piedmontese, on the other hand, it is the sixth presence in Paris, the fifth in the main draw where he had also reached the round of 16 in 2020 (stopped by Schwartzman). Last year he was eliminated in the third round after leading two sets to one against Ruud (later reached the final). In Paris, “Sonny” beat the American Ben Shelton, n.36 in the ranking and 30 in the seeding, in four sets. In the second round he repeated it by beating the French Humbert, n.40 in the ranking, in three sets. Then the amazing comeback against the Russian Rublev, n.7 in the ranking and seeding, signing the first victory over a top-ten in a Major, the sixth overall. For virtual Lorenzo he returns to the top 40 (n.39).
