Pogacar abandons Liège-Bastogne-Liège after a crash

Tadej Pogacar has abandoned the Liège-Bastogne-Liège after a fall at kilometer 85 in which he was involved with the Dane Mikkel Honoré. The 24-year-old Slovenian from the UAE was Doyenne’s big favorite alongside Belgian Remco Evenepoel. This season Pogacar won Tour of Flanders, Amstel Gold Race And Walloon Arrow, but will therefore not be able to celebrate the Ardennes trio, which has only succeeded twice in history, to Davide Rebellin (2004) and Philippe Gilbert (2011). The crash occurred on a downhill section, about 170 km from the finish. Pogacar tried to get back on his bike, but was forced to retire immediately afterwards. All his team waited for him, but in vain. The race now becomes enormously more uncertain, as is the weather, rather “typical” on the Doyenne route: damp, rain, uncertainty until the finish. The hat-trick of the Ardennes instead succeeded in the Dutch women’s field Demi Volleringwho beat the Piedmontese Elisa Longo Borghini in the sprint in Liège and thus was able to celebrate the third race won in one week: Amstel, Freccia Vallone and, of course, Liège-Bastogne-Liege.
