“Only ferocity the world, my soul rage.” It is with this verse that “Il wisteria” ends, the poem that Pier Paolo Pasolini published in 1961 in the collection “The religion of my time”. This is how Tina Gesmundo, principal of the Bari-based scientific high school «Salvemini», opens «Pasolini. A corsair life », a meeting organized yesterday morning in the school auditorium that you saw prthe intellectual Nichi Vendola is the protagonist. It is no coincidence that immediately after reading the corsair’s poem, the student Massimiliano Bello recited “Pasoliniana”, an excerpt from the collection “Patrie” (Il Saggiatore, 2021), which Vendola dedicated to the twentieth century writer, of which this he year marks the 100th anniversary of his birth.

The interest by Nichi Vendola to the figure of Pier Paolo Pasolini has its origins in the drafting of his degree thesis, entirely dedicated to the corsair. «He was a poet, a novelist, an essayist, a filmmaker, a playwright, a man of kaleidoscopic versatility and an inexhaustible hunger for formal registers – Vendola begins -. But there is only one obsession with him: the irreducible contradiction between history and poetry, that is to say between the pain of changing reality and the immobile contemplation of that shelter from history which is poetry ». It is from this fixed point that Vendola starts and, in a circular movement, concludes his intervention, after having analyzed the poetic parable of the corsair, from the Friulian «Poems in Casarsa» to «Petrolio», from «Accattone» to «The Gospel according to Matthew».
