Oxfam Christmas gifts: “Paper the present, give the future”: over a thousand volunteers in 18 Italian regions

ROME – The Solidarity Christmas of is back again this year Oxfam Italy with the initiative Wrap the present, give a future. From 3 to 24 December it will be possible, in over 250 store from all over Italy, support the answer of oxfam in the most serious humanitarian crises in the world and offer help to young people in Italy who risk falling behind and abandoning their studies, after the very tough years of the pandemic and today grappling with the economic crisis.

Over 1,000 volunteers on the field. Throughout the Christmas period, over 1,000 volunteers from oxfam will be present in the Coin, Toys Center, Euronics, Tigotà, Ubik, Bimbostore and Villa Bebe stores – in Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Emilia Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Liguria, Lombardy, Marche, Puglia, Sicily, Sardinia, Tuscany , Umbria, Trentino Alto Adige, Val D’Aosta, Veneto and Molise – to wrap customers’ gifts in exchange for a small donation, which will help ensure clean water, sanitation, food and basic necessities in the areas of the vulnerable world, brought to their knees by years of war, climate change, pandemic and today inflation and economic crisis.

Yemen: over 18 million people without water. In aid of populations exhausted by conflict and poverty: in Yemen over 18 million without water, 6 million on the brink of famine. There are many humanitarian emergencies, often forgotten, which risk turning into real catastrophes without immediate intervention. As in Yemen, where the population – almost 8 years after the beginning of the conflict – has to deal with the increase in food prices, accelerated by the effects of the Ukrainian crisis, with at least half of the population suffering from food insecurity, 2 million children affected by acute malnutrition and over 6 million people on the verge of famine. In the country – where it has resumed fighting since last October, after a truce that lasted just 6 months – the nightmare of cholera is also reappearing and the vaccination rate for Covid19 is still very low: only half of the health facilities are functioning and nearly 18 million men, women and children lack access to clean water and adequate sanitation.

School dropout and the 64 Mondadori bookshops. A concrete gesture against school dropout and educational poverty. In the same period, in 64 Mondadori bookshops in the main Italian cities, it will be possible to support the work of oxfam to ensure fairness and equal opportunity of access and educational success for students at risk of dropping out of school. Since the beginning of the pandemic oxfam is committed to combating school dropout and educational poverty, improving access to socio-educational services for families in serious economic difficulty, today grappling with the increasingly strong impact of the “expensive life”. The projects for the school year that has just begun concern over 30 schools, more than 3,000 students and hundreds of teachers and envisage the collaboration of local and national partners, institutions and third sector realities.

The laboratories of students and teachers. Students and teachers will thus have the opportunity, by attending workshops and courses, to experiment with new teaching practices aimed at strengthening school skills, eliminating gender inequalities in schools and developing digital knowledge. To encourage the schooling of Ukrainian children who have arrived in Italy, Oxfam has also launched a linguistic mediation and accompaniment service in 15 primary and secondary schools which will last throughout the new school year. A delicate path, which in some cases takes place together with the distance learning that some Ukrainian schools have continued to offer to students, but which over the months, and the continuation of the war, is becoming essential. Inequalities and the 50 “Libraccio” bookshops. Furthermore, in 50 Libraccio bookshops throughout Italy it will be possible to contribute to the work of oxfam to counter the great inequality of access to school and education achieved even in the poorest countries.
