In the newsstand and App insert, the preview of «Victory City» by the Anglo-Indian author; the dialogue between the two-time Strega award-winning writer and the French director; a text by the ex-marine novelist (with a digital extra)

Return to talk about the family and the difficulties of relationships in today’s world the French director and playwright Florian Zeller, in the new movie The Son («Il Figlio») which will be in Italian cinemas on 9 February. With the very intense dialogue between Zeller and the writer Sandro Veronesi the new issue of «la Lettura» opens on the themes of the film, #581, on Saturday 14 January in the App and Sunday 15 on the newsstand. After the touching, painful The Fatherwith which he won the Oscar for screenplay (with Christopher Hampton), Zeller continues in the new work the construction of a trilogy dedicated to the contemporary family (waiting for The Motherthe third chapter): in the conversation with Veronesi, the director explains that in the new film he wanted to tell the unbridgeable distances, the fragmentations and the fragility of a relationship that is no longer so defined, that between father and son, in a family in which Abandonment and depression weigh more than affection.

Another preview on «la Lettura» is the new, awaited book by Salman Rushdie,
Victory City, which will be released in the United States on the 7th, in England on February 9th, and which will be in Italy for Mondadori in the month of February: it is the first since the attack of August 2022, in which the writer, stabbed during a conference, suffered serious injuries and lost the sight in one eye. Matteo Persivale, who previewed the new novel for “la Lettura”, tells in the supplement the imaginary and mythical world that Rushdie built by playing with the expedient of the “found manuscript” and even re-founding the Indian civilization of its origins.

He talks about India today and its geopolitical aspirations in the new world scenario economist and Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, in the interview by Alessandra Muglia. Even in the App of «la Lettura», in the Topics section, you can read an extra focus dedicated to the Indian region, and in particular to the five modern challenges of that world, told in the in-depth study curated by Muglia herself.

A little-known story of heroism and goodness is told by the writer Fabiano Massimi, that in his If there is forgiveness (Longanesi, in bookstores since January 24) reconstructs the story of English broker Nicholas Winton (1909-2015), who at great risk managed to save 669 children of Jewish or dissident families from Nazi persecution, taking them by train from Prague through Europe to London: the writer visits the places of rescue with “La Lettura”, and talks about it with Patrizia You violate.

In the Looks section, another preview concerns the event Arte Fiera, which in Bologna it will return from 3 February, again to its historic location, pavilions 25 and 26, and will have a particular signature, or rather two. To the curator Simone Menegoi in fact it joins a well-known collector, Enea Righi: in the conversation between the two, curated by Stefano Bucci, the particularities of this edition are illustrated which will bring many changes, not only logistical and organizational, with new settings, “great returns” of many art galleries, and with a special attention for Italian artists.

Another preview, in the Masks: the director Paolo Genovese brings to the screen the story he has already told in a novel (Einaudi, 2018), The first day of my life, which will be in theaters on January 26. The story of four people who have decided to end it all, and a mysterious man who tries to bring them back to life, with a pinch of magic: metaphorically speaking, it is also an invitation to fall in love with existence again, after very hard years that have accentuated the problems and sufferings of all. In Cecilia Bressanelli’s interview, the director recounts the journey of his project, born before the pandemic and created when the health emergency was still ongoing, with filming carried out in an almost deserted Rome at the beginning of 2021.

The new issue closes with an extensive intervention by a Marine who is also a bestselling author, the American Carl Marlantes: in the supplement, the writer tells how the idea for his novel came about Matterhorn whose new edition will be in the Solferino bookstore from 20 January. A monumental work that narrates the Vietnam War, or rather the story of the soldiers who fought with Marlantes: and explains “what it means to be eighteen or nineteen and become adults in war”. Matterhorn returns with a new Introduction, of which we anticipate an excerpt in the Themes section of the App of «la Lettura».
