Nuovo Franchi, the goal: cutting the ribbon for the centenary of the viola

Lintriguing idea, to inaugurate the new Artemio Franchi exactly on Fiorentina’s 100th birthday. On August 29, 2026 in fact it will fall on Saturday, a perfect opportunity to ask the Serie A League to let the Viola team play early (as is now customary, in fact, the championships begin at the end of summer) and enjoy what would be a historic evening. The purple supporters’ associations, present yesterday at the public meeting for the restyling of Campo di Marte organized at the Mandela Forum, they push to make the hypothesis concrete and both Palazzo Vecchio and Fiorentina would naturally be delighted to please them: there would be time, because the start of construction sites at the stadium is expected between the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024, as Mayor Nardella recalled, with the end of the works expected to arrive 24 months later. Of course, the hypothesis (increasingly concrete) that Fiorentina remains in Florence even during the redevelopment of the stadium would slow everything down, but Arup’s technicians are convinced that they can still respect, even anticipate, the times set by the Pnrr. What is certain is that the redevelopment of the stadium will start with the restoration of Nervi’s work (the architect Lucia spoke about it yesterdayno Cupelloni, collaborator of Arup: The first thing to do will be to reset the changes made to the Nervi stadium in these decades of life, and then concentrate on the construction of the new functional spaces and of course the two curves that will bring the fans closer to the field.

The risk, precisely at the moment of the construction of the two curves, that the capacity is reduced to a minimum also for safety reasons, but as has already emerged in recent days, the hypothesis of moving to Empoli or elsewhere is becoming more remote. Fiorentina fans have already faced similar difficulties, when for Italia ’90 the stadium was modernized to host the World Cup (for a period the team moved to Pistoia for the championship and to Perugia for the Uefa Cup). However, the curiosity is there, as is the enthusiasm. Also because the prospect of celebrating Viola’s 100th birthday in a stadium that is finally modern and up to the team’s ambitions inevitably fascinates: The stadium will be more beautiful, it will be a pleasure to go and see Fiorentina, many citizens say.

As mentioned, the party could become memorable, given that for the 90th anniversary of the Viola (at the time there were the Della Valles), the club managed to involve all the greatest players in the history of Fiorentina in a walkway on the green lawn of the Franchi which is still fondly remembered today. From now to the summer of 2026 there are still three and a half years. A very long time in which to overcome a thousand obstacles. The works, the construction sites, the inconveniences, in short, those perplexities that filled the Mandela evening yesterday. The goal for set. Now it remains only to roll up their sleeves to make it a reality.
