The incredible story of the Colombian defender, who landed at the Reds in 2018 and then sent on loan seven times. He never got a work permit

Five years at Liverpool as a “forgotten” player. It’s the incredible story of Anderson Arroyo, a Colombian defender who landed in England in 2018 after impressing his national team at the Under-20 South American Championship. For him, Liverpool was a dream come true. Playing in the Premier League, being coached by a trained coach like Jurgen Klopp, playing with van Dijk and Salah. A dream come true.

But Liverpool immediately transferred him on loan for the rest of the season to Mallorca, who sent him to their B team. And when he returned to England in summer 2018, he was packaged again on loan, this time in Belgium, at Gent. Not only. Because in the following years it was always the same music for the Colombian boy. Loan after loan: to Mlada Boleslav in the Czech Republic for the 2019-20 season, then back to Spain, to Salamanca, for 2020-21. And Mirandes in 2021-2022. A story, the one with Liverpool, that seemed over, but the Reds made a sensational decision last year: they renewed his contract until 2025, still transferring him to Alaves on loan.

A year later, this summer, Anderson was sent on loan to Andorra, thus returning to the Spanish second division. It’s about the seventh loan for the boy – who will turn 24 in September – in just over five years since he set foot in Liverpool. To see him wearing his dream shirt at least once, he will still have to wait. But what was the problem for this defender? When he landed in England, did not get a work permitfor which the rules are very stringent even for footballers. And he still hasn’t been able to get it. But hope dies last.
