NBA draft: San Antonio wins the lottery, Wembanyama will choose

Victor Wembanyama is now ready to start his NBA career with the San Antonio Spurs. The Texas franchise won the draft lottery and the #1 pick overall. Spurs were one of the three teams with the best odds (14%) of getting the first pick, which they will almost certainly use for Wembanyama. The 19-year-old Frenchman is one of the most touted prospects in NBA history and should make an immediate impact on the league.
It is the third time Spurs have won the lottery and on both previous occasions they have made picks that have paid off for decades: David Robinson in 1987 and Tim Duncan in 1997. “Our future was already bright,” said Spurs managing partner Peter J. Holt. “Now it will be even more.” General Manager Brian Wright called it “an incredible day” for the franchise and the fans.
Charlotte will choose second followed by Portland and Houston. Speaking of Wembanyama the NBA commissioner, Adam Silver, called him “an incredible young man” who “clearly seems to be a generational talent.” The Spurs finished last season with a 22-60 record, the second worst in the NBA.
