Naples, at the Archaeological Museum opens “Byzantines”

Over four hundred works on display, coming from the Mann collections and from loans granted by 57 Italian and Greek institutions. “There is an archaeological Campania after the fall of Rome and to tell the thousand years of this empire in a large exhibition is for Mann a new stage on the journey, which started from the Lombards, towards a more complete identity of our own museum – explains the director Paolo Giulierini -. Byzantine Naples will be a surprise for many, as they discover a six-century intertwining of destinies between the city and the empire, after its submission to Rome. And even when the Byzantine dominion of Naples evaporated, this bond with the Empire was never denied and was transformed into a driving force to keep alive the contacts with the Mediterranean, the tension towards other worlds».

With the amazing jewellery, sculptures, mosaics, frescoes, seals, coins, ceramics, enamels, silver furnishings and architectural elements are also on display.

The exhibition Byzantines, places, symbols and communities of a millennial empire supported by the Campania Region and organized by Villagio Globale was inaugurated by the president of the Campania Region Vincenzo De Luca, who during his speech announced a project for the Mann: «We are thinking of the expansion of the Archaeological Museum of Naples with a wing of the Colosimo institute and a quality architectural connection between the two buildings».
