Never before has it been possible to visit the Medici Chapels after 5pm. From now on, the museum behind San Lorenzo is open until 7pm for the first time in history. It was possible thanks to the entry of 18 new custodians who arrived at the direction of the Bargello (to which the Chapels belong) with this year’s maxi-competition which in the last two weeks has fleshed out the fragile forces of the Ministry of Culture by over six thousand reinforcements. Mainly custodians, those who make the difference in deciding what to open and for how many hours the places of art. Around a hundred have touched Tuscany. And this is how the Medici Chapels are now also accessible to those who leave the office at 6 pm, and it had never happened before.
Another 9 arrived at the Accademia Gallery. The director Cecilie Hollberg was expecting 15 but she is fine like this: “We are happy, they are happy” is the manager’s comment. “At least we will be able to live more serene and no more tetris shifts that collapse at the first cold”. The Uffizi are the least happy: they have limited reinforcements: 15 custodians. According to the old organic plant, 110 were due, “as a real requirement, 209 would have been needed”, they say. They are intended for 3 days a week in the hall or in Bobobli for supervision and 2 days in didactic-curatorial assistance in the office or in the laboratory.
Who has the ringing voice of enthusiasm that would almost uncork the best bottle is Paola D’Agostino, director of the five museums that belong to the Bargello. “Two weeks ago we had 20 new security guards, 18 of which took up service: so we were able to open the chapels both in the morning and in the afternoon every day, except Tuesday which is the weekly closing day, as well as opening Sunday morning. And then the Bargello every Saturday morning and afternoon, keeping the other days only in the morning and Sundays at alternating times. And for Orsanmichele we can keep the summer schedule even in winter, which is extended in summer: Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10 to 18 ». The arrival of new forces allowed “a huge step,” she says. Even if “there are still many missing: we are 40 when we should be 90”.
The one who has been able to press the most on the accelerator of change is Stefano Casciu, director of the Tuscan museum complex: with 60 new hires he has been able to increase the days of opening at the Medici villas and gardens of Castello, Petraia, Cerreto Guidi and Poggio a Caiano. In the latter, the Museum of Still Life also reopens to the public, with over two hundred works that belonged to the Medici. But also to the archaeological area of Comeana in Carmignano, with the Etruscan tumuli. In Florence the offer of visits to San Marco and Sant’Apollonia is extended. San Salvi and Villa il Ventaglio. In Arezzo the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art, the Archaeological Museum, Casa Vasari and the Basilica of San Francesco. In Grosseto the archaeological area of Roselle, the Archaeological Museum and Vetulonia. In Pisa the National Museum of San Matteo and the Royal Palace. “We were able to reopen some places of culture closed due to lack of staff and extend the hours of others – says Casciu – the new hires partially heal the general staff deficit, I hope we can proceed with further recruitments”.
