Mozambique, a map for the electrification of the territory created to encourage investment

ROME – Mozambique, ranked 185th according to the ranking of theHDI-Human Development Index, is an extremely poor country with large internal disparities. One of the factors underlying the inequalities is the lack of access to energy services. In fact, only 29.6% of the population has access to energy, and mostly only in urban areas. With 63% of Mozambicans living in rural areas, it is clear that rural electrification is an absolute priority to consolidate a fair and sustainable development process. Indeed, energy represents a precondition for ensuring the satisfaction of basic needs such as lighting and food security, and for guaranteeing access to the main community services, such as education and health. In this context, the area of ​​Zambezia, the second most populated province in the country, has 82% of its population concentrated in rural areas, and holds the record for the province with the largest number of people without access to energy.

The project. Hence the idea of ​​developing the TERESA projectcreated with the collaboration of the Milan Polytechnic, created with the support of Call Technologies for Sustainable Development 2021 promoted by Cariplo Foundation And Company of San Paolo Foundationto offer concrete answers to three interconnected critical issues: the absence on the part of the “decision makers” of data on remote communities, the consequent difficulty in defining electrification strategies and lastly, as a chain effect, the difficulty of attracting of investments due to the high risks typical of remote areas where electrification systems are characterized by high uncertainty.

The ultimate goal. It is to help ensure universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services. “A path – explain ICEI, the organization that has established relationships with public institutions and stakeholders, with a strong presence in the area for 5 years – which has ensured, on the one hand, the collection of analyzes and data on a large scale, identifying energy needs of the area, with a specific mapping of renewable sources, on the other hand it has allowed the launch and dissemination of an interactive web interface which, showing the results of the study, will facilitate the use by local and international stakeholders to ensure the possibility of plan the electrification of the entire target area and to channel investments faster and more effectively.
