MotoGp, Assen: Bezzecchi flies in free practice. Then Martin and Miller

ASSEN – Bezzecchi dominated the first day of free practice in the Cathedral of Speed, finishing with the best time in the afternoon after he had already put them all behind him in the morning: the Rimini rider even devoted himself for a long time to improving his race pace, which was uncatchable for the others. Behind him, the other Ducati rider who, like Bez, is in full battle for the title: the Spanish Martin with the GP23 in the Pramac version finishes second, 130 thousandths behind the Mooney Vr47 team rider. On the third step of the very virtual podium on Friday Miller climbs with the Ktm, narrowly ahead of a Bagnaia who – after suffering for an hour and a half – finds balance and effectiveness in the final part of the FP2. Between first and fourth there are just 2 tenths, but the most impressive thing is that the best 10 – those who go directly to Q2 – are enclosed in half a second. Bastianini remains out, still on the road to recovery after breaking his right scapula, and a desperate Marc Marquez who crashes again while trying to exploit the slipstream of Vinales’ Aprilia: the Cannibal with his Honda can’t do better than 19th chrono and returns to the pits with bowed head. What an ordeal.

Bezzecchi: “I feel great on this track”

“On this track, I scored my first MotoGP podium of my career, last year: I have good memories, it’s true, but it’s not that I’m good just for that”. Bezzecchi, a day to frame. “I feel better in the fast corners than in the slow ones: I’m quite strong in braking but when it turns so wide I feel really at ease. This morning we were unlucky with a problem with the bike, but thank goodness we were able to manage it well in the garage”. He says that fourth place at the Sachsenring gave him confidence: “Because we got it by working with intelligence and method, let’s continue like this”.

The awakening of Quartararo, Marini ok

For Quartararo it is the best Friday of the whole season: the Frenchman sets the sixth fastest time of the day, 278 thousandths behind Bezzecchi. The other Yamaha rider, Morbidelli, also seems to be showing signs of an awakening: but he bobbles in the last sector of the track and finishes only 16th. The Aprilias, which performed well last time out, confirm that the Noale bikes are able to express themselves well in these parts: Vinales 5th and Aleix Espargarò 7th, not a bad first day waiting for tomorrow morning’s qualifying. Directly in Q2 a second Ktm (Binder) and two Ducatis (5 Reds in the first 10): Marini is 9th, but according to team manager Uccio Salucci he could have done better (“Something went a little wrong in the final stretch, otherwise he could have easily do 2nd), Alex Marquez 10th and 88 thousandths ahead of Zarco.
