For a few days the Mount Carpegna has a new name. The local authorities have in fact named the pass on the Tuscan-Romagnolo Apennines in memory of Marco Pantani. The great champion of Cesenatico, who passed away in 2004, used to train on this climb. The ceremony of naming the pass, which is now called Marco Pantani pass, took place on Saturday 25 March in the presence of the cyclist’s family members and various political and sporting personalities. Pantani used the slopes of the pass (7 km at 9%, the summit point at an altitude of 1370 metres) located between the provinces of Pesaro-Urbino and that of Arezzo, about seventy kilometers from Cesenatico, as a traditional test for his proverbial attacks . On its hairpin bends you can also read a phrase, “this is the Pirate’s sky”, and cyclists, as recalled by the mayor of Carpegna, Mirco Ruggeri, used to say “today let’s go up the Pantani slope”. The new title will also be the new toponym of the pass. “It is on this climb that I have prepared many of my victories. I don’t need to try all the big climbs one by one before a Giro or a Tour. Carpegna is enough for me”. Mother Tonina was also present at the naming ceremony: “It means that he has left and given something to cycling”. The Pirate has never raced the Carpegna climb in the Giro, which appeared in the 1973 editions (first on the summit Eddy Merckx), 1974 (Fuente), 2008 (Bertolini) and 2014 (Arredondo). In 2022 Tadej Pogacar traveled it in perfect solitude, among piles of snow, during the Tirreno-Adriatico.

The race will be organized by Marco Selleri and Marco Pavarini’s Extragiro. the winner will also wear a special jersey made by Alé Cycling, a leading Italian company in the sector, which recalls with yellow and pink the great feat, never repeated, of Pantani who conquered the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France in the same 1998 season.
