Midfielder Luka Modric, along with compatriot Lovren, accused of perjury in a trial dating back to 2017

The power of attorney of Osijekthe fourth Croatian city in terms of population, he accuses
Luke Modricmidfielder of real Madrid of perjury. As reported by the news agency Hinaon Wednesday the charge against the 2018 Ballon d’Or was formalized together with that against the compatriot Dejan Lovren, now at Lyon. The two are accused of false testimony dating back to a trial held on June 13, 2017 before the municipal court of Osijek against three senior managers of Dinamo Zagreb, accused of tax evasion and illicit appropriation of money from the club’s coffers in the context of the transfers of Modric to Tottenham (2008) and of Lovren to Lyon (2010).

The accusation against Modric

Modric allegedly testified on the dates on which the attachments to the contracts governing the division of fees between him and Dinamo for the transfer were signed. The prosecution claims that the fact that the midfielder, as he himself claims, signed these annexes every time he extended his professional contract, is false, since in reality he would have put everything in black and white only when he had already left the Croatian company.

At the end of the trial, the judges sentenced the defendants to various sentences, including six and a half years in prison for former Dinamo CEO Zdravko Mamic. The testimonies of Modric and Lovren would have favored the latter in his escape, before sentencing, to Bosnia-Herzegovina, where he currently lives.
