He was chosen by Enzo Ferrari as head of the Maranello Racing Department when he was only 27 years old. With the Rossa he also won 54 GPs and 4 drivers’ world titles

A genius of the cars of yesteryear. died in Modena at the age of 87 Mauro Forghieriengineer, car designer of Formula 1, close collaborator of Enzo Ferrari and director of the Reds in the golden age of Lauda’s titles. It was the Drake who chose Forghieri as head of the Maranello Racing Department: a far-sighted choice for the then 27-year-old engineer, who joined Ferrari just two years after graduating from the University of Bologna.

Starting in 1962, holding the position of head of the technical department for F1 racing cars and the Sport prototypes category, Forghieri drove the Modenese supercars to the victory of 54 world championship grand prix, four drivers ‘world titles and seven constructors’ titles; moreover, in his long activity in Maranello, he introduced new technical elements that have marked the history of engines, such as, for example, the installation of ailerons on vehicles whizzing on the tracks.

At the end of the eighties the engineer then left the Ferrari to land first at Lamborghini and then at Bugatti, always maintaining the innovative character that has characterized his career. On 13 January, on the occasion of his 87th birthday, the Municipality of Modena had conferred honorary citizenship on him, in particular for his contribution to the development of the Motor valley, an area – explained on that occasion the mayor Gian Carlo Muzzarelli – where the passion for mechanics has a long tradition and where factories of car brands were born that have contributed to making the name of Modena known in the world. I am moved, receiving this recognition from my city has an absolute value – Mauro Forghieri commented on that occasion -. During my career I have had many opportunities to go to work abroad, but I have always refused because it would have meant leaving Modena. Even when I move, I don’t miss an opportunity to talk about my city, which I love deeply and proudly, just as many people from Modena love it.
