In an atmosphere of female beatification regardlessit takes courage to organize the tricks of a gynaeceum like the one proposed by A family vice. A free-all of crimes, bad thoughts, betrayals gender-fluidhunt for money, for better status, where men, male patriarchy are the origin of evil, as the original title says, but they are about to be overwhelmed. Obstacles to jump, not even to get around. Story of a group of erinyes, some with male names, inexplicably accomplices, irreparably damned, with an uncertain profile, looking for revenge, who do not benefit from the closed air of the French province. No one without sin in the sociological thriller tending towards the puzzle by Sbastien Marnier, the shrewd noir architect, author of the appreciable Irreprochable.
The candid soul, but only for half a film, Stphane (Laure Calamy) toiling in a food factory where anchovies and fish soup are packaged and often goes to prison to visit an inmate girlfriend (Suzanne Clement). Once evicted, she tries to get in touch with the father-master, Serge Dumontel (Jacques Weber), rich and selfish, victim of a recent stroke, who abandoned his long deceased mother. The two meet in the wind of Porquerolles, in Provence, where the man (badly) manages a female court gathered in a sumptuous villa on the sea: 1) his wife Louise (Dominique Blanc) who while away the time with compulsive shopping, 2) daughter George (Doria Tiller) ready to replace dad in the family hotel & nightclub business, 3) his niece Jeanne (Cleste Brunnquell), an aspiring photographer, 4) the maid spies on Agns (Veronique Ruggia-Saura). In addition, the shadow of a dead brother hovers over the group, whom we will only see in photographs.
Stphane shows herself to be sweet and devoted even if, of course, she doesn’t tell it right. Serge encourages her, considers her a wedge in the feminine wall in front of her: the others, he thinks, are waiting to see me dead. We are only at the first shuffling of cards. Everyone has their own bluff to play, a legacy of wrongs to avenge, a role to conquer. It defines itself as a sort of theater of evil where everyone turns out to be amoral puppets and plays a part they are unable to fully sustain. Marnier plays to displace, to change points of view, to transform the truth by accompanying the path towards the madness of her characters. Laure Calamy, already busy mummy Of Full Time – One hundred percenttruly magnificent while drawing Stphane’s pathological ambiguity. The real thrill comes from there, from his liesrather than from a creaking door.
