Istanbul, the autopsy of the 18-year-old would confirm suicide. The Rome prosecutor’s office opens a file, while the investigation entrusted to the general attorney of Anatolia continues

The day after the tragedy, a succession of hugs, tears, regrets. The body of Julia Itumathe 18-year-old volleyball player who died on Thursday morning after falling from the window of the Volleyball Hotel in Istanbul, was taken yesterday to the megacity’s Institute of Forensic Medicine where she was reassembled so that her mother, Elizabeth, could bid her a final farewell.

Next to the woman is her sister Helen, the staff of the Italian consulate and embassy, the sporting director of Igor, Enrico Marchioni, and the club doctor, Federica Malgrati.

An autopsy was also performed on the athlete’s body yesterday morning but the results, which will have to be translated into Italian, will only arrive in the next few days.

The investigation and the mystery of the text messages

Meanwhile, the investigation entrusted to the Attorney General of Anatolia Ismail Uar continues who, according to some rumors, could give the go-ahead for the return of the body to the homeland as early as today. In this way the funeral could be celebrated at San Filippo Neri in Milan on Monday or Tuesday next week. While there seems to be no doubt that the girl took her own life, the circumstances that led to her dramatic gesture are not yet clear, nor is there a precise reconstruction of what happened in the hours leading up to her death. Yesterday the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet, one of the most accredited in the country, revealed that Julia, shortly before her death, sent a WhatsApp saying goodbye. But the press office of Igor Volley ensured that no message from the volleyball player arrived on the team chat that night.

The last farewell message

Similarly, the rumor that a boyfriend or friend, on the night of the tragedy, would have written to his roommate, the Spanish Lucia Varela Gomez, and to other players to make sure how Julia was doing, would also be groundless. In short, no one would have been aware of the state of mind of the young woman who kept everything inside herself. What is certain, however, is that Itema spent the last hours of his life telephoning and chatting. So who did I send the farewell WhatsApp to? Her answer will be given by the investigators who are examining the girl’s smartphone to reconstruct what happened. Meanwhile, the Rome prosecutor’s office has also opened an investigation into related documents.

The match dedicated to Julia

Yesterday night Julia’s mother returned to Milan, accompanied by her sister and the team technicians who had remained in Istanbul. Today the latter will reunite with the team in Novara and will try to get the girls to recover from the shock. The players will have until Wednesday to find the strength to get back on the pitch. Indeed, yesterday the board of directors of the women’s Serie A volleyball league ordered the postponement of the championship match between Novara and Chieri, a match that will be dedicated to Julia.

The mourning on the arm and the photo on the giant screens

The Italian Volleyball Federation (Fipav) has decided that a minute’s silence will be observed on the pitch until Sunday. In addition, during the weekend, the athletes will play with mourning on their arms and a moment will be dedicated to Julia in all the arenas. A photograph of her will be projected on the giant screens and an inscription dedicated to her will pass on the LEDs. Even the speaker will remember the young woman and no music will be played in the facilities in this round of the A1 and A2 Series Championships.

the medal dedicated to her

It is not easy to find the words, the reasons to go on, to go back to playing in our case, in the face of life’s tragedies that annihilate and strike us, unpredictably, suddenly, apparently without a reason, the president of the League wrote in a note Women’s Serie A Volleyball, Mauro Fabris. And a moving thought for the 18-year-old who also arrived from Turkey where Alice D’Amato won the bronze medal at the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships and also wanted to dedicate it to the missing athlete: Today’s medal (yesterday, ed) for my mother, my father Massimo, who passed away in September, my sister Asia and for Julia Ituma, the volleyball player who, like me, had come to Turkey for a sporting dream and unfortunately is no longer there.
