It is a totally unrecognizable Jennifer Gray who recently appeared on social media: blonde and voluminous hair (but it’s a wig) and very heavy make-up, the 62-year-old star of “Dirty Dancing” has in fact transformed into Gwen Shamblin, the American guru and founder of the Christian diet program “The Weigh Down Workshop” (which invited to substitute God for food and gained worldwide popularity in the 90s) and which Gray will now bring to the screen in the film “Gwen Shamblin: Starving For Salvation”, which will be released next February 4 on Lifetime.

“Call me Gwen” wrote the actress not surprisingly in the caption accompanying the shot in which she appears in the guise of the “holy woman”, who died on May 29, 2021, at the age of 66, in a plane crash and considered by many a cult figure not only for her diet (the book «The Weigh Down Diet», published in 1997, has sold over 1.2 million copies), but also for the Remnant Fellowship Church, which she founded in Franklin, in Tennessee in 1999.

«Gwen Shamblin: Starving For Salvation» comes after the documentary «The Way Down: God, Greed and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin», made by director Marina Zenovich and broadcast by HBO Max in two episodes (in September 2021 and in April of this year), which was strongly contested by the Shamblin religious organization “for the absurd statements and defamatory accusations it contains”. In addition to playing the controversial dietician, Gray will also reprise the role that made her famous: the actress will in fact once again be Frances “Baby” Houseman in the sequel to «Dirty Dancing», of which she is also an executive producer.
